The bridge crossing the valley that splits Luxembourg in two. This valley was the first significant natural feature we had seen since the Cliffs of Dover.

The Ennerdale Bridges won the much covertried Structural Steel design award in 1997. The bridges consist of two counter – weighted bascule bridges crossing the River Hull. The bridge lifting mechanism is powered by eight large hydraulic cylinders weighing around eight tons, each unit is housed in a purpose built room beneath the bridge. The control of the hydraulics is from a remote desk in the operator's control tower. Command, control and monitoring are networked to dual redundant PLC’s.
The PLC system provides acceleration and speed profile control to minimise lift times. It also monitors wind loading and compensates accordingly for windage factors.

St Mary's Island was originally part of the Chatham Dockyard in Kent, but has since been cut off by the construction of three large basins. In 1994 mixed residential development was planned for the island creating the need for a link between island and mainland.

Arup was responsible for the civil and structural engineering of the Chatham lifting bridge which carries two lanes of traffic to St Mary's Island, and was opened in 1996. The bridge has an all steel orthotopic trough deck which is opened by two hydraulic rams, leaving a clear waterway 12 metres wide enabling boats to pass. The piers and the side spans are in reinforced concrete and have smooth gently curved surfaces, which help to emphasise the clean flowing form of the whole bridge.

An der Viti-Furth führt die stählerne Klappbrücke von 1965 über die Ilmenau. Sie wurde am 9. April nach 8 Monatiger Bauzeit eingeweiht.
Die Überquerung der Ilmenau hat es an dieser Stelle schon zu frühen Zeiten gegeben. Der Geschichte nach wurde hier im Jahre 782 Marianus, der in Bardowick das Evangelium lehrte, erschlagen.

Eine Brücke hingegen wurde hier erstmals 1059 urkundlich erwähnt. Die mittelalterlichen Stiche von Frese und Schlöpken zeigen bereits die Konstruktion einer Klappbrücke auf.

Die letzte hölzerne Klappbrücke stammt aus dem Jahre 1888. Es wird nun in einigen schriftlichen Abhandlungen erwähnt, dass diese nach ihrem Abriss im Jahre 1964 in dem Technischen Freilichtmuseum in Hagen (Westfalen) als Museumsstück wieder aufgebaut worden sei. Nachforschungen seitens Webmaster "bardowick.com" haben jedoch ergeben, daß diese Aussage leider nicht zutrifft. Von einer Bardowicker Brücke ist dort nichts bekannt.
