Chatham Bridge

St Mary's Island was originally part of the Chatham Dockyard in Kent, but has since been cut off by the construction of three large basins. In 1994 mixed residential development was planned for the island creating the need for a link between island and mainland.
Arup was responsible for the civil and structural engineering of the Chatham lifting bridge which carries two lanes of traffic to St Mary's Island, and was opened in 1996. The bridge has an all steel orthotopic trough deck which is opened by two hydraulic rams, leaving a clear waterway 12 metres wide enabling boats to pass. The piers and the side spans are in reinforced concrete and have smooth gently curved surfaces, which help to emphasise the clean flowing form of the whole bridge. |

Illinois Tollway Interchange

The Illinois Tollway Interchange between the North-South and East-West Tollway demonstrates that segmental concrete structures can be applied to complicated curved geometry alignments. It also proves that segmental structures are extremely competitive with steel girders, especially on curved alignments. The four structures, individually not large enough to justify a segmental design, were aggregated into one contract of 186,000 square', which was successfully bid against a curved steel I-girder design, saving the Authority $4.5 million or about 30% of the cost of the steel bid.

Hurricane Frederick destroyed the original bridge to Dauphin Island, leaving the state to provide expensive ferry service. Speed was an issue in the design and construction of the replacement bridge. In just 34 months time, the new bridge was open. The high level portion of the bridge consists of three spans, the main one being 400’ – the first 400’ span on a precast concrete segmental bridge. The bridge features twin wall I-shaped piers and an integral riding surface.

Chesapeake & Delaware Canal Bridge, a vista of light across the canal by the same name on Delaware S.R. #1, has the longest concrete span in the northeast at 750’. The innovative design solutions in this bridge helped obtain an economical solution by saving $6.2 million in alternate bid designs and an aesthetically pleasing design. It has set the standard for the 21st century long span bridge design.
